Introduction

Hello World!

Welcome to my dissertation blog. My name is Tom and I am a Games Design student at University Campus Suffolk. Here you will find my thoughts, decisions and actions I take through each step of my dissertation.

Over the course of 2 years I have come far not only in my skills as a games designer but also my ambitions as an individual. I enjoy making games that have led players on a joyful game play experience which is what I will be striving to push forward across to my final year.

I have thought long and hard over the summer about what I want to do for my dissertation as well as what I want to do when I leave. I want it to encompass all aspects of games design that I’m interested in, what I’m good at and not so good at so I can develop further skills necessary to get what I want out of it.

I have been fortunate to be involved with The Mix, a youth organisation that has a vision for young people to be inspired and develop confidence in a creative environment. I have been running Games workshops that have proven to be popular for 11- 19 years of age. Similar to professional game making as a group we have been developing a game together using agile but in a more relaxed and joyful presence.

The Mix supports other creative workshops from editing, photography, film, to music and I have gained good working relations with others across the establishment.

I have been extremely keen to make a game for mobile that is easy to use and is addictive to play thinking about the type of input the user must use, different from that of traditional mouse and keyboard.

My initial idea is to create a mobile game for The Mix where I will focus a lot of effort into the game’s dynamics and aesthetics that the player experiences whilst also learning new inputs for the types of gesture controls and bringing them both in harmony with each other to bring out the best user experience.  My dissertation idea focuses on my design skills but I also want to collaborate with The Mix, their resources and artistic expertise they may have to develop this game together. This will involve management and communication by me to lead a team of people with the same vision for the final game. The game will be played by people 11 – 19 years of age and will encourage them to join or find out more about The Mix.

The next stages of my project will be a more in depth explanation of my idea based upon the research i will conduct. In my next post I will be discussing the jobs that i have been researching and a personal assessment of myself, so thanks for taking time to read this and I hope you keep checking back.

Thanks!
